My Camino de Santiago Hiking Adventure
In 2012, my husband and I, along with our 4 children (then ages 2, 5, 7 and 9) walked the famous ‘Way’ pilgrimage: The Camino de Santiago. You can read about more about it here in Walking the Way with Children.
I remember spending weeks researching the right gear for the trip.
One of the essentials most important to me was my backpack. I spent hours pouring over online reviews.
I wanted a pack that would fit well with my smaller frame, but promised to be comfortable. After all, I would wear it for hours each day for days.
The Backpack
The pack I ended up purchasing, and one that I have subsequently recommended to friends and to-be pilgrims was the Deuter ACT Trail 28 SL Hiking Backpack.
Now, almost 10 years after walking the Camino de Santiago, I am still recommending the Deuter Act Trail 28 Hiking Backpack.
Sure, it has seen it’s share of upgrades over the years, but it remains the best women’s backpack for the Camino de Santiago.
When I planned another big hiking adventure a few years ago, I bought this same women’s pack for teenage daughter who needed a backpack. I wanted to find a lightweight, women’s fit backpack and when I began my research, guess what pack once again appeared consistently at the top of all reviews?
Yep, you guessed it.
The Deuter ACT Trail 28 SL Hiking Backpack.
So, I bought the backpack again. Comparing the pack to my six year old pack, it seems there are few changes, if any, besides the removal of a strap and a less bulky hip belt pocket–changes which I assume help reduce the weight of this already light pack.
Last year, I bought the pack AGAIN. This time for my other teenage daughter. The backpack is still amazing and a great value.

My teen absolutely loves the colors in her Deuter ACT Trail 28 SL Backpack. Her pack looks like the one in the photo above. I appreciate the bright blue colors for high visibility.
My older Deuter ACT Trail 28 SL Backpack red/spicy orange color and I loved that about it when I hiked with it on the Camino de Santiago, and I still love that feature, too.
Oh, another reason to love the Deuter ACT Trail 28 SL? The backpack features a rainshield….just in case, and that’s nice for added piece of mind while hiking and a definite must for long distance hiking adventures..
